Game Overview
Mafia: Definitive Edition is a complete remake of the 2002 original, rebuilt entirely with modern technology while retaining its story-focused, linear mission format and 1930s Lost Heaven setting. Once again, players take on the role of Tommy Angelo, a simple taxi driver whose meeting with two members of the Salieri crime family leads him into organised crime. The gameplay is divided into twenty closely scripted chapters that emphasise cinematic storytelling over open-ended freedom. The city of Lost Heaven has been completely reimagined with larger neighbourhoods, architecture true to the period, vintage vehicles, and radio broadcasts from the era, even though it is mainly used as a setting for the plot rather than as a place where players can carry out side activities—players are taken from one objective to the next with clearly defined mission instructions.
The game promotes realism by having traffic laws, speed limits, and police patrols that respond to dangerous driving. The remake also includes optional collectables and a 'Free Ride' mode that lets players explore the entire map outside the main campaign. Still, the core experience remains the linear, chapter-by-chapter progression that gives Tommy Angelo's rise and fall the seriousness and rhythm of traditional gangster films.

The modern cover-based shooting system has been used to rebuild Combat in Mafia: Definitive Edition, enabling Tommy to take cover behind various environmental objects, fire blindly around corners, and make use of a range of weapons that are appropriate to the period, such as Tommy guns, shotguns, pistols, and grenades; at the same time, the regenerating health system and the plentiful checkpoints make the combat easier to handle than in the originally very tough version.
Melee combat is intense and situationally relevant, featuring takedowns that use the environment and harsh finishing moves, and the stealth sections have been extended so players can approach silently using shadows, disguises, and quiet takedowns. Driving remains a key element of the game, featuring a large number of 1930s vehicles that handle in a way that reflects their real weight and demand attention to damage, fuel, and manual transmission options. There is a specific 'driving physics' setting included that lets players select between arcade-style handling and a more realistic simulation style.

The revised version also includes an entirely new orchestral score, expanded voice acting with a new cast, and updated motion-capture performances that give the characters greater emotional depth. The main aim is to take Tommy through his position within the Salieri family, the development of his moral dilemma, and his eventual betrayal and testimony against his former colleagues, thus presenting a tragic and cinematic storyline that stays true to the original yet provides a visually impressive and technically improved experience for both long-time fans and those who are new to it.
