Mafia II: Definitive Edition is a remastered form of the 2010 story-focused third-person action-adventure game, set in the fictitious American city of Empire Bay in the 1940s and early 1950s, tracing the experiences of Vito Scaletta, a Sicilian immigrant and a veteran of World War II who comes back to his hometown and slowly works his way up the ranks of the criminal underworld. The game combines a linear, mission-based plot with a fairly open-world design, with a highly detailed city—comprising districts based on New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles—serving as a backdrop for a tightly scripted narrative rather than offering a free-form environment filled with endless distractions. Each chapter moves Vito's story forward through a sequence of cinematic scenes such as protection rackets, assassinations, robberies, and prison sequences, with players travelling between the various objectives using period-accurate vehicles that need to take into account fuel, damage, and traffic regulations.

The game stresses atmosphere and immersion rather than giving the player a high degree of freedom, featuring a strong linear storyline that focuses on character development, dialogue, and the gradual and unavoidable moral decline of the protagonist, so that the overall gameplay feels more like playing a film in the style of Scorsese than a conventional open-world crime simulator. The Definitive Edition improves on the original with better textures, enhanced lighting and visual effects, more refined character models, and greater audio fidelity, bringing Empire Bay to life with improved clarity while keeping the careful pacing and narrative emphasis of the original release.

The combat in Mafia II: Definitive Edition is cover-based and intentionally heavy, asking players to use environmental cover, fire blind when turning corners, and deal with a health system with no automatic regeneration, though the game offers adjustable difficulty options that affect enemy accuracy and damage. The shooting mechanics include a range of period-appropriate weapons—such as Tommy guns, revolvers, shotguns, and grenades—while melee combat is intense and brutal, featuring context-sensitive finishing moves and takedowns that use the environment. Driving remains a key part of the experience, with a garage full of 1940s and 1950s cars that handle realistically, showing both weight and fragility; the police system also reacts to speeding, collisions, and other traffic offences, giving each journey through Empire Bay real consequences.

The Definitive Edition combines the base game with all the previously released downloadable content, including the "Jimmy's Vendetta" and "Joe's Adventures" story expansions, which provide dozens of extra missions, new playable characters, and greater access to the city, together with the "Made Man", "Renegade", "Greaser", and "Vegas" packs that give players bonus weapons, vehicles, clothing, and cash.

The remaster features a completely updated soundtrack with licensed, era-authentic music, plus new collectables and achievement support on all platforms. The main aim is to take Vito from being an immigrant in a difficult situation to becoming a full-fledged member of the mob, as he moves through the dangerous politics of three competing crime families and, in the end, faces the betrayal and sacrifice that are characteristic of life in the mob—all the while enjoying one of the most visually accurate and narratively rich portrayals yet created of mid-century American organised crime. This edition has been refined and expanded for modern platforms.
