FIFA 22 brings a major improvement to the way the game is played on the pitch through the introduction of HyperMotion Technology (available only on next-gen consoles and Stadia), which employs advanced 11v11 match capture to animate more than 4,000 new realistic football moves, thus greatly changing the way that players move, sprint, and compete for the ball. The main gameplay focus is smooth, situation-appropriate ball control, with the new Explosive Sprint feature distinguishing between controlled acceleration and pure speed, so agile players like Messi or Neymar can break past defenders in tight areas, while defenders now have smarter movement and lateral shifts for better tracking.

The Composed Finishing system improves shooting accuracy by making it depend on the player's balance, body angle, and the pressure exerted by nearby defenders—this leads to a greater variety of goal types, ranging from curled shots with the outside of the foot to first-time volleys—while the Active Touch System provides defenders and attackers with more realistic animations when intercepting and trapping. The passing and ball physics have also been completely revised with real trajectory modelling, where wind, ground conditions and the spin given to the ball all influence its flight path. The goalkeeper's intelligence has been redesigned with a new Goalkeeper Save System that includes hundreds of new animation branches, making shot-stopping more reactive and positionally accurate than ever.

FIFA 22 features a major overhaul of its Tactical A.I., which greatly enhances teammates' positioning and their decisions when the ball is not in play—defenders now show smarter zonal marking by tracking runners into the channels and cutting off passing routes, all without any input from the player, while the fullbacks automatically move into a back-three position during attacking transitions to stop counter-attacks. The new Pressure System provides a more accurate measure of stamina loss, since high-pressing strategies can leave players extremely fatigued, forcing managers to choose between aggressive play and maintaining a solid defensive shape. At the same time, set pieces have been redesigned with a tactical free-kick system that enables multiple runners, feinted shots, and training-ground routines.

Career Mode returns with a dynamic player development system in which attribute progress is determined by a player's form, match ratings, and position-specific training exercises, along with an interactive transfer negotiation system that accounts for realistic agent demands, release clauses, and player morale. VOLTA Football moves towards a more compact, street-football style with custom arenas, special abilities (such as trickster flicks or power shots), and the ability to switch between street and stadium play through a single progression system.

FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) continues to be the main mode, including Division Rivals, Weekend League, and Squad Building Challenges, all of which have now been improved by the introduction of FUT Heroes—famous players linked to particular club rivalries who gain chemistry bonuses due to their historical connection—with a restructured seasonal rewards system that promotes regular play. The aim is to build a dynasty in all modes, master the hyper-realistic physics engine, outwit opponents tactically, and succeed from Sunday league matches to the Champions League final, with each match feeling different and reacting to your strategic choices.
