Resident Evil HD Remaster is the 2015 re-release of the 2002 GameCube remake, which itself was a full rebuild of the 1996 original, and honestly it's the best way to play the game that started survival horror. You're still a S.T.A.R.S. member trapped in a mansion full of zombies, puzzles, and things far worse than zombies, but everything around that core has been polished, expanded, and made genuinely terrifying in a way the original only hinted at.
The gameplay keeps the classic formula intact: fixed camera angles, tank controls (though you can switch to modern movement if you want), limited ammo, limited saves, and an inventory that forces hard choices. What the remake adds is Crimson Heads—zombies you didn't burn or decapitate get back up faster, stronger, and way angrier, which turns every early encounter into a long-term decision. Do you waste kerosene on this corpse now, or save it for later and risk a Crimson Head hunting you through a hallway you need to cross? That one mechanic changes how you play the entire game.
The mansion itself is redesigned with new rooms, new puzzles, and a defensive weapon system that lets you shove a zombie off you with a dagger or a stun gun. The visuals in the HD version are gorgeous, with pre-rendered backgrounds that still look stunning and lighting that makes every shadow feel like a threat. The voice acting is better than the original's legendary cheese, but it keeps enough of the B-movie charm to stay fun.
It's tough, it's slow, and it demands patience, but if you want to understand why survival horror exists, this is the version to play.
