Game Overview
Far Cry 5 is the series' familiar open-world formula, but set in the huge, rural setting of Hope County in Montana, with the player taking on the role of a junior deputy who is sent to arrest the charismatic and deeply fanatical doomsday cult leader Joseph Seed. But things go wrong, and the player is left behind enemy lines. The game runs primarily on the principle of liberation through resistance: instead of a linear campaign, players are dropped into a continuous, dynamic sandbox environment in which they need to form a local resistance through completing missions, destroying cult assets, and rescuing hostages in three separate areas, each of which is controlled by one of Joseph’s lieutenants (John, Jacob, and Faith). The game features a Resistance Meter—whichever action you carry out, whether it's blowing up a cult truck or freeing an outpost, contributes to filling this meter.
As a result, the cult launches increasingly fierce counter-attacks, eventually leading to a confrontation with a regional boss. The whole map is open from the beginning, so players can attack the different regions in any order, with the cult's forces adjusting dynamically according to your progress—patrols become more intense, checkpoints are made more strongly fortified, and aerial pursuits occur more often as you pose a greater threat. Far Cry 5 sticks to the series' characteristic "emergent sandbox" approach by giving players an exceptional degree of freedom, thanks to a wide variety of weapons, explosives, and vehicles, all of which can now be switched out on the go using a quick-select weapon wheel.

The Guns for Hire feature includes a wide range of recruitable specialist companions—such as a grandmother who is a sniper and a pilot who gives aerial support—each having their own special abilities and perk trees that can be upgraded as the player gains shared experience. Players can also recruit random resistance fighters, domesticated animals (including the popular dog Boomer and the cheetah Peaches), and even take control of helicopters, planes, or muscle cars to attack cult strongholds from any direction.
The level of chaos in the sandbox increases through environmental interactions: setting prairie fires can create smokescreens or drive enemies together, blowing up fuel tankers can destroy entire compounds, and using bait to draw aggressive wildlife into enemy camps turns predators into unintentional allies. The game also includes a comprehensive Arcade mode, a separate, self-contained experience with a level editor and a selection of community-created maps, offering options like zombie survival and deathmatch arenas that exist completely outside the main campaign.
