Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is a proper return to the Sands of Time storyline, set between the events of the first game and Warrior Within, and it leans hard into what made that trilogy so beloved: acrobatic platforming, time-manipulation powers, and stylish sword combat against waves of sand creatures. You play as the Prince visiting his brother Malik's kingdom, only to watch the whole place get overrun by an army of sand monsters after Malik foolishly unleashes Solomon's Army. The core gameplay loop is classic Prince of Persia—you're constantly moving, chaining together wall-runs, jumps, pole swings, ledge grabs, and ceiling runs to cross massive vertical rooms that look like they'd give a normal person a heart attack.
What sets this one apart is the return and expansion of the power of time, which lets you rewind mistakes, slow down combat, and even freeze water to create temporary platforms and poles where none existed. That water-freezing mechanic is the star of the show—you'll freeze waterfalls mid-fall and leap across them before they unfreeze, and the game keeps finding clever new ways to test your timing with it. There's also a memory system where you can save your position as a ghost and rewind to it instantly, which becomes essential during the tougher platforming sections. The level design is linear but packed with spectacle, and the difficulty curve is forgiving enough that you feel like a hero without ever breezing through it.

Combat in The Forgotten Sands is built around crowd control and fluid swordplay, and it's honestly one of the more underrated parts of the game. The Prince can slash, dodge, roll, vault over enemies, and unleash a variety of elemental powers—fire, ice, earth, and wind—that you unlock and upgrade as you earn XP from defeated foes. You'll regularly find yourself surrounded by dozens of sand creatures at once, and the game wants you to feel overwhelmed but capable, encouraging you to use spin attacks, aerial slams, and your time powers to thin the herd. The upgrade system is simple but satisfying: you spend experience points on health boosts, energy upgrades, and new combat abilities, and you can respec whenever you want, which is a nice touch.
There are also boss fights that test everything you've learned, plus environmental puzzles that blend combat and platforming in creative ways. The whole experience is short—you can finish it in eight to ten hours—but it's tightly paced, visually striking, and full of those "one more room" moments that keep you playing way past your bedtime. If you loved the Sands of Time trilogy and somehow missed this one, it's absolutely worth going back to. It captures that same blend of athletic freedom, time-bending tension, and swashbuckling charm that made the series special in the first place.
