Game Overview
Mafia 3 is an open-world third-person action-adventure game set in the fictional city of New Bordeaux, a lively reinterpretation of New Orleans in 1968, and centres on Lincoln Clay, a veteran of the Vietnam War who survives a harsh betrayal at the hands of the Italian mafia and then launches a determined effort to destroy their empire bit by bit. Unlike its earlier titles, which relied on a linear, cinematic approach to storytelling, Mafia 3 uses a full open-world sandbox format, with the city split into ten districts, each run by the Salieri-inspired Marcano crime family and its underbosses.
The main gameplay element is systematic liberation: Lincoln collects information by questioning informants, bugging junction boxes, and destroying rackets—illegal activities such as drug dens, prostitution rings, and smuggling operations—which weakens the mafia's control over each district. When a district has been sufficiently destabilized, Lincoln faces and kills the racket boss before giving the area to one of three underbosses (Cassandra, Burke, or Vito), each of whom offers special benefits and abilities but also becomes resentful if they are ignored, thus requiring a careful balance between loyalty and the distribution of power during the course of the game.

The combat in Mafia 3 is intense, fast, and violent, combining cover-based shooting with stealth features that let Lincoln silently eliminate enemies with his knife, carry out brutal takedowns, and use tactical distractions such as throwing bottles or whistling to separate enemies from their groups. The weapon variety includes a range of period-correct firearms—such as pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, and grenade launchers—plus a combat sequence in which killing enemies one after another triggers slow-motion "Brutal Kills" that restore Lincoln's health and give the firefight a more cinematic effect.
Because of his military training, Lincoln has extra abilities such as luring enemies, marking targets through walls, and calling on his three lieutenants, who can send supplies, vehicles, or even hit squads to help in combat. Driving is an important part of the game, with a broad selection of 1960s-style vehicles that can be customized and upgraded. At the same time, the police system responds to criminal activity based on a changing "heat" level that increases if Lincoln causes too much public disorder.

The story is presented in a documentary format that includes interviews with people who survived the events years later, giving the account historical depth and moral uncertainty about Lincoln's actions. The main aim is to destroy the Marcano crime family methodically, deal with the traitors who had left Lincoln to die, and determine the future of New Bordeaux's criminal world—all while having to cope with the racial tensions and social disruption that characterized America in 1968, so that Mafia 3 becomes just as much a commentary on power and prejudice as it is a revenge thriller.
